The Creation of “The King and I”
The last of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s four great musical plays of the 1940s and early ‘50s was written as a vehicle for its female star and ended up as a star-making vehicle for its unknown opposite lead. The cumulative effect of the four landmark shows in eight years so drained Rodgers & Hammerstein that they never attempted anything as serious or ambitious again.
