In 1943, Bob was a 19 year-old art student from Chicago when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He fought in three battles and encountered numerous horrors, but found solace in sketching and painting his experiences as a combat artist.
Until… He lost his eyesight from exploded shrapnel as his regiment stormed a small beach. Blind and bereft in a Naval hospital, a stateside surgeon arrived and partially saved his vision, hours before he was to have his eyes removed.
After recovering, he returned home a hero and became a prolific illustrator, teacher and family man. He lived a life continuing to paint his experiences, while portraying the colorful lives and cultures of others.
