Real Woodstock, the Woodstock Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Woodstock Groundhog Day Committee announce the launch of the Woodstock Groundhog Day Self Guided Walking Tour Video, narrated by location manager Bob Hudgins.
For many years, longtime members of the Woodstock Groundhog Day Committee have wanted to archive the behind-the-scenes stories associated with the stops on the Woodstock Groundhog Day Walking Tour.
As time went on, frequent tour guides and committee members Doug and Maggie Crane worried that the stories would be lost when they and others were no longer able to lead the fans who come from all over the world. They wanted to ensure the stories would live on.
The Groundhog Day Walking Tour is a 15-stop tour of various filming locations from the 1992 Groundhog Day hit film produced by Columbia Pictures. In recent years, the Woodstock on Film and On the Stage Mural Pedway has been added to encourage fans to visit the mural and sculpture garden. Many of the locations have been plaqued to signify their importance to the city’s involvement with the movie.
Over the years, committee members have led thousands of fans on the tour during Groundhog Day weekend and on special occasions. On numerous occasions, Bob Hudgins, the original location manager for the film and the man credited with introducing director Harold Ramis to Woodstock, has returned to lead tours himself, sharing his recollections of filming with the cast and crew to the delight of superfans.
The Groundhog Day Committee collaborated with the Woodstock Area Chamber of Commerce to take advantage of having Bob Hudgins back in Woodstock in 2020 and sat him down with videographer Alberto Perez to create a 30-minute video.
The Woodstock Groundhog Day Self Guided Walking Tour Video will be available on the Real Woodstock YouTube channel beginning Friday, January 22. The tour gives visitors near and far the chance to connect to the filming locations and hear the stories that bring those sites to life from the man who brought the filming to Woodstock.
Viewers can enjoy watching the video if they are unable to make it to the Groundhog Day Festival, or they can listen while visiting the sites in person. The best part is the video can be watched again and again.
“We are so pleased to have Bob’s stories available for everyone, every day. He is a treasure, and while we try to remember his stories to retell them, it’s just not the same. This is a great opportunity for anyone to take the tour at any time of year.”
