Lighting of the Square

Each holiday season, Woodstock gathers in the heart of the historic Square for one of the community’s most beloved traditions, the annual Lighting of the Square.

Held the Friday after Thanksgiving, this magical evening marks the official start of the holiday season in Woodstock. As dusk falls, thousands of lights illuminate the trees, the Square, and the iconic Old McHenry County Courthouse. Buildings surrounding the Square glow with classic white perimeter lighting, creating a warm and festive backdrop for the celebration.

The event often includes seasonal music, family activities, special guests, and the countdown that brings the Square to life in holiday glow. Once lit, the lights remain on display throughout the season, shining nightly through Groundhog Day so visitors can enjoy the charm of Woodstock well into winter.
